The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) announces Dr. Sylvia Earle, marine biologist, explorer, author, and lecturer, who is known for her dedication to protecting the ocean and its wildlife, as its honoree for the 2019 Beastly Ball. Considered “one the most important fund-raisers” by the Los Angeles Times, the Beastly Ball is being held on Saturday, May 18, 2019, and is critical to the fulfillment of the Los Angeles Zoo’s mission, which advocates for animal conservation and habitat preservation for some of the world’s most rare and vulnerable species, including the California condor, mountain yellow-legged frogs, and peninsular pronghorn. This star-studded event brings together celebrities, industry executives, city officials, and zoo supporters for a wild night of food, fun, and fundraising.
“Each year we honor a dedicated conservationist and Dr. Earle rose to the top of our list for her work in protecting the world’s oceans, which is so vital to the long-term ecological benefit of people, animals, and nature,” says Los Angeles Zoo Trustee and Beastly Ball Chair Tyler K. Kelley. “Dr. Earle’s lauded career as an oceanographer has had tremendous impact on our planet for both current and future generations and we are thrilled to honor her,” Kelley goes on to say.
The first-ever Conservation Hero Award will be given to Glen Curado, founder and CEO of the World Harvest Charities and Family Services, an area non-profit that provides food, basic staples, and living essentials to over 48,000 families and seniors in 58 counties within the state of California. This newly created award is bestowed on an individual, program, or project that exemplifies the Zoo’s mission to save animals from extinction and conserve the planet. Potential honorees are nominated and selected by Zoo and GLAZA staff.
“Glen was chosen by staff because of the incredible work he is doing to help those less fortunate in our city, his passion for sustainability and zero waste, and his demonstrated passion for the future of our world,” states GLAZA’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement Genie Vasels. “Additionally, we honor his partnership with the Zoo and the organization’s donations of produce to help feed the animals, which has contributed annually to tens of thousands of dollars in food cost savings for the Zoo,” Vasels goes on to say.
Guests of the Beastly Ball are treated to rare after-hours access of the Zoo, where the tree-studded route will lead them past animal encounters, including animal feedings, keeper chats, and up-close interactions; cuisine prepared by some of LA’s most notable restaurants, including Bottlefish, Celestino Ristorante, El Cholo, and Pink’s Famous Hot Dogs, among others; a mobile-bidding silent auction; roaming entertainment; and more. TV food personality Duff Goldman from Food Network reality television show Ace of Cakes will be the Ball’s first-ever Curator of Desserts, creating a sweet ending to an epic night.
Guests are invited to dress in “safari casual” attire.
