TOARTS launches Art with Heart, a program designed to bond families through arts experiences. TOARTS is committed to providing community arts programming at low cost, designed with the whole family in mind. TOARTS partners with a variety of local nonprofits and businesses to provide 2-hour hands-on experiences for the whole family to enjoy.
Two inaugural events have already been held. In August this year, TOARTS partnered with Discovery Center for Science and Technology and Art Makes You Smart to provide hands on arts and science activities in the lobby of the Fred Kavli Theatre at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center. This workshop titled ‘Discover the Science Behind the Arts’ taught over 100 kids and families about the origins of sound, they each learned about and made an aboriginal rain stick. The City of Thousand Oaks’ Deputy Cultural Affairs Director provided backstage tours of the Fred Kavli Theatre to everyone in attendance.
On September 24th over 40 kids and families gathered at the Mary and Richard Carpenter Plaza Park at the Civic Arts Plaza to participate in a Community Drum Circle sponsored by Remo Percussion who provided percussion instruments for each attendee as well as a professional facilitator to lead the group in making music and building community. The Guitar Center was on hand providing gift cards to their stores for each attendee. Participant comments included “I made new friends,” “I feel inspired,” “I loved spending time outdoors, making music.”
Art with Heart’s 3rd event will be held on October 29th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm when TOARTS will host Boo @ Kavli. This event will include a costume contest, ‘table or treat’ ‘boo-ths’ hosted by ArtTrek, Discovery Center for Science and Technology, Pacific Festival Ballet, Guitar Center, 5 Star Theatricals, New West Symphony, Triunfo YMCA, Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra and Conejo Schools Foundation. Kids are free; $5/adult donation requested.
