Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken Makes Los Angeles Sweeter

Last month, D.C.-born Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken opens its latest location on Main Street in Santa Monica. The opening day celebration includes a free doughnut for each guest and one “Golden Doughnut,” offered every hour of the day, redeemable for free doughnuts for an entire year. The Golden Doughnut will be filled with edible gold filing and mixed in with the rest of the free doughnuts. Golden Doughnut winners will be selected at random once every hour throughout the day. The Main Street storefront is home to the city’s first CBD doughnut. Made with birthday cake batter and topped with a CBD-infused chocolate buttercream frosting, the new comfort food joins Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken’s list of seasonal and signature doughnuts such as their iconic Crème Brûlée doughnut, Maple Bacon and the new Hot Vegan doughnuts. The diverse all-day dining menu also features breakfast chicken sandwiches, a French Toast doughnut, bone-in fried chicken, fried chicken sandwiches, and vegetarian friendly items including Grilled Cheese sandwiched between savory doughnut buns, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts. “Santa Monica is the perfect location for Astro’s playful personality, and we’re excited to be a part of the local community,” said Founding Partner Elliot Spaisman. “We’ve…

Drink Up on National Daiquiri Day

By Maria del Cisne Vital   “When life gives you lemons, make a daiquiri.” This common phrase used in the South is a motto to live by, since July 19 is National Daiquiri Day. Made with rum, citrus juice and any sort of sweetener, a daiquiri is bound to make your summer day better. SoCal brings this sweet drink to life with different, colorful variations, adding a twist to the classic drink. Gather your closest friends, take an Uber or Lyft, and enjoy a daiquiri-filled day!   Preux and Proper, an L.A. restaurant and bar, offers delicious food with a southern flare. Some New Orleans cuisine includes hush puppies and po’ boys. Unlike most bars, Preux and Proper has a frozen daiquiri dispenser machine. Yes, you read correctly. You’ll feel as if you’re walking down Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras with your frozen daiquiri. Different flavors are on rotation in the machine, but you are always in for a treat. You can sample a flight of daiquiris, or choose a combo of flavors to make your own multi-colored daiquiri. Think of it as an adult Slurpee. Address: 840 S Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90014 (213) 896-0090   Poolhouse San…

Southern California offers beach and water-fun excursions for anyone looking for a relaxing, yet fashionable, way to cool off. Get ready to lather on some sunscreen and suit up for some of the best ways to celebrate National Bikini Day on July 5:   Island Living Start your day relaxing in a cabana on Catalina Island. The Descanso Beach Club has plenty of options, like their Signature, Presidential and Hillside cabanas, along with chaise lounge chairs. You can even rent or buy folates, like the iconic flamingo floatie, to relax on out in the ocean. Nearby, paddle board and kayak rentals are available for the more sporty groups. On a clear day, try and spot the Long Beach port straight ahead.   Surf’s Up After you’ve basked in the sun, get your surf on in San Clemente. Located on the southern tip of Orange County, San Clemente is one of the best wave-rich towns in SoCal, according to Surfer Magazine. For this, invest in high-waisted bottoms and…

Keep Calm and Clean On at the Beach This Week

By Maria del Cisne Vital   Southern California is a destination spot for its fun attractions and beautiful scenery— especially that of a beach with glistening waters and smooth sands. However, with the high popularity of beaches comes the high amount of trash left behind by its visitors. According to Kellogg, by the year 2050 the amount of plastic in our oceans will exceed the amount of fish if we continue at the same rate of pollution. This week, known as the Earth Day for beaches, SoCal’s beaches invite you to take action and help clean up. Check out the tips below for how to make your day at the beach a clean one!   Tip #1: Leave only footsteps on the beach. Always throw your trash away and don’t leave anything behind. This tip may seem like a no-brainer, but after a long day at the beach it’s hard to get the motivation to clean up after your self or make the trek to find the nearest trashcan. To make this easier, bring a bag or bin where you can place your trash throughout the day. That way, your trash won’t fly away in the sea breeze and it…
