All athletes strive to ultimately achieve greatness. Most can recall when they went from good to great and who it was that took them there. Parents of athletes yearn to give this to their children but it takes a keen eye and selflessness to recognize when it’s time to pass the torch to a professional. Antonio Oropeza realized this for his son Antonio Jr. and his team The Melbourne City FC. and sought out CoachUp.
CoachUp helps athletes find the perfect coach for that athlete’s needs. Antonio Sr. saw that Kenney Walker of the L.A. Galaxy was an available coach. Walker is a powerful and composed midfielder, and Antonio Jr. had just switched positions, from goalie to fielder. Walker makes time for this program because “I love to see kids grow and improve.” Walker’s mentors “helped create a drive that is with me everyday, on and off the field. I want to give that to today’s young players” .
Walker started with the fundamentals. He worked on “first touch and dribbling skills with Antonio.” After just one session “the biggest change was how much his confidence had grown” says Walker. “You have to incorporate what you learn back to your team” states Walker. Antonio Jr. passed on what he had learned and his team now looks to him for guidance, encouraging the newfound inner strength.
The team had averaged around five shots on goals. After Antonio’s session with Walker, the team took 18 shots on goal in their first win of the season. Of those 18 shots, Antonio Jr. was responsible for 5 of those shots. Was this the moment Antonio went from good to great? That he gained confidence and leadership as well as soccer skills, one thing is for sure, the true meaning of greatness has already been achieved.
