5 Cool Places to Escape the SoCal Heat

With the summer temperatures in California ranging from tolerable to unbearable, finding an air-conditioned solace from which to escape the heat may seem impossible. Remember to always wear sunscreen and stay hydrated, especially when outdoors, and on the doggiest of dog days, spend your time indoors with one of these uniquely SoCal getaways.

The famous El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood is playing “Finding Dory” through August 7. The 90 year old Disney theatre is the perfect destination for a family outing. Its Spanish Colonial architecture and vibrant colors both inside and outside are reminiscent of a vacation. Over 100 speakers surround the theatre and its RealD 3D screen making it the ultimate movie experience. 6838 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90028 https://elcapitantheatre.com/

Living in Southern California, sea life is prominent. Take a trip to Long Beach’s Aquarium of the Pacific and educate yourself on California’s vast array of oceanic mammals, fish and plants. There is something for everyone to enjoy at the aquarium — just seeing all the water and swimming is sure to cool you off. Make sure to call in advance to avoid school or camp trips so the views are less crowded. 100 Aquarium Way Long Beach, CA 90802 http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/

If you still want to feel the wind in your hair, but aren’t quite ready to jump out of a plane, take a trip to Perris Indoor Skydiving. It is one of only two locations in the world that offers this level of practice and experience. Perris encourages all skill levels to try it out. Children as young as three are welcome as well as experts wanting to finesse their skills. 2093 Goetz Rd. Perris, CA 92570-9315. http://skydiveperris.com/indoor-skydiving-home/

To escape the heat of the summer season all together, get a taste of winter at Ice-Plex. The rink’s options include joining an ice skating school, free skating (perfect for beginners) or watching an amateur hockey game while everything else is melting outside. Bring the family, friends or a special someone, some gloves and be ready to fall. The sun might even be a warm welcome after. 555 N Tulip Escondido, CA 92025. http://iceoplexescondido.com/

There is no better opportunity to become cultured than a 100-degree weather day. It is the perfect time to escape the heat and hang out in one of Los Angeles’ many air conditioned museums. Art fanatics can immerse themselves for hours in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, otherwise known at LACMA, The Broad or the Getty Center. These museums are some of the most photographed and instagrammed spots in all of Los Angeles. For those more interested in STEM categories, check out the Griffith Observatory or the California Science Center, the current home of the space shuttle Endeavor. Finally if you just can’t choose,  the Grammy Museum, the Museum of Death or the La Brea Tar Pits won’t disappoint. For hours and locations, call or visit each museum’s website.
