The Unprecedented Disney Art Exhibit

The most extensive collection of Disney original concept art, historical documents, theme park memorabilia, and handcrafted items made by Walt Disney, himself, is on display for the public now through February 27 at the Van Eaton Galleries in Sherman Oaks. For collectors, live and online auctions follow on February 28 and March 1.

Spanning some 60 years, The Story of Disneyland Collection begins with Disney’s visions for the future and offers an exceptional look into the legend’s life, his team of original Imagineers, initial plans for Disneyland, and other landmarks forming his legacy.

Always the consummate showman and visionary, inspiration for his theme parks grew out of a visit to a local carousel park with his daughters. The shoddy boardwalks and booths did not measure up to the facilities Disney found in Europe’s parks, so he decided to bring that quality here for safe enjoyment by adults as well as children, adding his own magical touch. In 1954, he broke ground on a 75 acre plot in Anaheim and with the opening of Disneyland less than a year later, a worldwide cultural phenomenon was born for the pleasure of generations to come.

This exhibit and sale afford people the opportunity to not only experience, but also to own a piece of that magic. The collection to delight fans of all ages includes over 1000 pieces including artwork for the early concept for Tomorrowland by Bruce Bushman, one of Disney’s major designers during the park development. Other pieces include an original Slue Foot Sue costume from the Golden Horseshoe, head of an original “Pinocchio, one of only two etched glass E-ticket signs that hung at the entrance to The Pirates of the Caribbean, an original Disneyland Tiki Bird from the enchanted Tiki Room, and a house from the Storybookland Village.

Disney was also fascinated with miniatures and acquired a large collection — some of which inspired much bigger ideas for his attractions and other works. A miniature pot belly stove hand-crafted and painted by Walt Disney, himself, will be offered in the online auction.

Hours for the public exhibition are 10 am to 6 pm daily now through February 27.

Van Eaton Galleries are located at 13613 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks, California.
