Not even a global pandemic can stop Red Boat’s R&D Chef Diep Tran from hosting her 9th annual Banh Chung Collective celebrating Tết – Vietnamese New Year. Tran’s annual Lunar New Year celebration was born out of a desire to create a space that strengthens bonds among women and people of color, and to affirm queer identities in her community. This year’s event will enlist a number of noteworthy chefs from across the country to help roll-out the merriment. Each participating restaurant will personalize their kits accordingly with specially prepared dishes to enjoy along with all the items needed to make banh chung – a rich, sticky rice dumpling filled with pork, shallots and mung beans, wrapped in banana leaves and boiled until tender. Attendees will have everything they’ll need to enjoy Lunar New Year straight from the comfort of their homes.
