Southern California is one of the most diverse and timeless destinations, especially when it comes to family-friendly activities. Whether you want to treat the family to an all-day adventure at one of SoCal’s many theme parks, go on a nature-packed hike with the kids, or just sit back and relax at a drive-in, the options are limitless. Spend the month of August, which happens to be Family Fun Month, with your loved ones and make some SoCal memories.
Have a Beach Day
Soak up the SoCal sun with the whole family at any of the over 50 beaches in the region. From Orange County to San Diego, there’s no shortage of places to build sandcastles, catch some waves and get your tan on.
Check out Huntington Beach for a true SoCal surf experience. This beach town is where surf culture gained traction, and it is often called “Surf City USA.” The pier is a great place to take the kids! Travel further south to La Jolla Shores, also known as the jewel of San Diego. This beach has space for lying out, great waves to catch, and sights to see. Seals and sea lions often make an appearance at a cove called the Children’s Pool.
Get Some Exercise
After lounging on the beach, change it up with some exercise. SoCal is filled with different trails that test your agility while offering up stunning city, nature and coastal views. Bring the kids along, and make sure you pack some water and snacks!
Some notable hikes are at Stone Creek in Idyllwild, where the hikes range from 1.5 to 3 miles throughout the national park, and the Mt. Hollywood Trail, which leads you to the iconic Hollywood sign. You’ll be able to see the beautiful L.A. skyline along with optimal views of the Griffith Observatory.
Watch a Movie
With so many new kid-friendly movies coming out this summer, a movie night is a must. SoCal has many luxury theaters– The Lot at Fashion Island serves you dinner, drinks and has reclining seats for a prime movie watching experience. For something more retro, check out the several drive-in movie theaters SoCal has to offer. The Mission Tiki Theatre in Montclair plays the latest films and gives you an affordable and high-quality family experience. Open seven days a week, the Van Buren Theater in Riverside is also a great drive-in option.
Visit a Museum
SoCal has an immense amount of art and culture to explore, and there is no shortage of museums and art galleries to get a glimpse of it all. From classical art to modern reinventions, local artists have changed the landscape of SoCal’s art scene. From intricate and mind-bending wall murals in Venice and DTLA to abstract and innovative exhibits like Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Room” at The Broad Museum, you and the whole family will end the day with a new appreciation for the beautiful art SoCal has to offer.
Ride Some Rollercoasters
SoCal is home to numerous amusement parks including Six Flags, Knott’s Berry Farm, Universal Studios and Disneyland. Whether you and the kids are seeking the ultimate thrill (Goliath at Six Flags has a 255-foot drop) or a day filled with your favorite characters (Snoopy, Minions, and Mickey… what more could you ask for?), these theme parks are the best splurge. Be sure to take lots of photos because you’ll want to keep all of these memories forever.
