Between May 15-17, Tania Pérez-Salas’ Compañía de Danza will entertain Southern Californians at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles for the very first time.
If you don’t know who Tania Pérez-Salas is, she’s only Mexico’s most famous contemporary choreographer since establishing her dance company in 1994. She is particularly known for creating dance pieces that are expressively raw, and technically proficient in the sense that the lighting, costumes, sets, and music are also top notch. Though the difference in Pérez-Salas’ artistry is that the latter never becomes a crutch, as it is her stories told through modernistic ballet that drive the presentation by engaging and evoking emotions from the audience.
And in less than a month, after having taken her brand of dance all over the world, Southern Californians can expect two dance pieces to be featured in each of the upcoming three showings. The first is “Ex-Stasis,” which offers a deep look into the impulsiveness and intensity of human desire, from food to sex.
On the topic of this specific dance, Pérez-Salas says, “We have moved away from our raw nature and have forgotten to trust our instincts, which cause us to lose the communication between our mind and our body. In this work, I attempt to listen from an alternative [and more attentive] perspective.”
The second dance piece that attendees will witness is “Made in Mexico,” which is Pérez-Salas’ latest work, and one that is a celebration of her origin and life as a Mexican.
“In this [one], I use my perspective as a Mexican female artist to create images that illustrate male and female gender roles in contemporary Mexican society as perceived through the culture’s strong emphasis on masculinity, a concept known as ‘machismo’,” Pérez-Salas explains.
Besides the vivid and personal content that is sure to be on display, another reason to make one of the three dates is the fact that tickets begin at a very affordable $28. Each ticket is good for more than just the show, too, as it is inclusive of before and after festivities with a one-hour discussion with Pérez-Salas before the start in addition to a Q&A with the dancers following the event.
